When I photographed Laura’s Thanksgiving table, I was actually down there to get photos of the newly finished bonus room. I completed a design board for Laura and Jon when they first moved in a little over a year ago. Some of the board included DIY projects to keep costs low, but they have been troopers and finally finished everything up! The room is an office and hang-out space. We’ve since changed a few things (like my originally proposed floor plan), but that’s kind of how these projects go!
Here is the design board, including an existing sofa and Jon’s patriotic artwork:
And here is how it turned out!
Of course the cherry on top was this coffee table turned ottoman with the tray that I made for their housewarming gift! It ties our two main fabrics together and holds remotes and playing cards.
I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, especially as this was a pretty budget-conscious project. Next we’re tackling their living room, and we already found a great fabric pairing for some pillows.
So what do you think? Have you ever had a project end up different from how you planned (like this floor plan)? Do you have a space like this in your home that could use some sprucing up? I’d love to hear about it!

I love love love our room! Thank you Maggie for designing a great space for us.
Maggie, I love the layout of this room! I’m having trouble making our office/family room function in a multi-purpose way, and this is some great inspiration! Nicely done! Xo, Katie
Since the baby, we are trying to cram a dining room, office, and TV/Living/Baby playstuff room all into the main area of our apartment. … these side-by side desks and the folding craft/anything table are great ideas to tuck away for an imminent massive rearrangement!
Wow that turned out great!!!
