One of my sweet readers posted on my facebook page a few days ago with this question:

I am 6 months pregnant. I have a pretty clear idea of what I want to do in the room but I am having a really hard time finding a cute, comfortable and reasonably priced chair. I would like it to be modern and possibly a rocker but not one of those gliders. Do you have any recommendations for where I could look?

Congratulations to Jaclyn and her hubby! I do indeed have several ideas of where they could look for a chair or rocker for their nursery.

1. Overstock.com. This is a great resource for few pieces at a discount, and several popular styles as a knock-off. Shipping to you is cheap, but return shipping is NOT, so be sure before you buy!

2. Target. Look beyond the baby section! A slipper chair could be a good option with a low throw pillow for some back support for mama. Online the selection is better, and you’ll find a lot of options under $150.

3. Craigslist. I know you’re cutting it close(ish), but I bet with a week of dedicated searching you could find the perfect thing. Try keyword searches for rocker, chair, rocking chair, glider, nursery chair, upholstered chair, vintage chair, etc. Give it a good cleaning (use a steamer to disinfect any upholstery) and you’re good to go. You might also want to have it reupholstered, but that may run a few hundred dollars (but if you get the perfect chair at a steal, it might be worth it).

4. Yard sales, consignment shops, and friends. Pretty self-explanatory.

5. Under the radar big-stores. Think Sears, JCPenney, Kohls… a lot of the selection can be less than stylish, but oftentimes they have one or two great pieces that are still priced fairly.

5. If you’re willing to spend a little more (say, $500+), pick out a great neutral chair that is well made and really comfortable. Try places like Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn. The reason I include this is to encourage you think picture the chair in your home in a few years, where it might be in the child’s room, a new nursery, or even in the living room. Choosing a practical and neutral chair of better quality than Target or a discount store could mean that the chair is with you for longer, increasing its value overtime.

Best of luck to you, Jaclyn!

Great ideas! We found our nursery chair at Ikea-the Poang “rocker”. It is really comfy and got it for a good price.

That said, if you don’t want to go the Ikea route, craigslist and vintage shops are a great resource I use a lot too. If you can make a slipcover something-even better!

Thank you so much for answering my question. I feel honored and I really appreciate your advice. I think I’m going to try to hit up craigslist first and see what hidden treasures I can find on this little island :) Cheers Maggie :)
