I was having fun the other day reading some of my archives (back when my pictures were way less than awesome and terribly sized). I found my original living room tour (from my bachelorette pad) and thought we could do a little “that was then/this is now” tour.
First up, bookshelves and tv stand then (and weird feather wreath and sad little tv):
Bookshelves now (in the dining room):
TV stand now:
Sofa & art before:
Well the sofa is no more (went in our office before being sold on Craigslist, but the lamps, white table, and photo frames are all in our living room (frames got a facelift with some white, and then brown, spray paint):
And my coffee table then:
I’ve since added some more books…
Funny to see how my style has changed, and how it’s adapted to new furniture (that I didn’t get to choose!). I think it’s pretty clear that my taste has matured a bit, and that I’ve had a little more time (and therefore money) to invest in more textiles and accessories. I’ve also learned more about mixing pattern and texture, how to hang art properly (oy), and the importance of scale. One thing I did have right though, was styling bookshelves. Love that!
How has your style developed over the years?

I just started following your blog today! I am so excited to go back and read your older post! OMG my style has changed so much over the years. I moved to Seattle a year ago with only a 4×4 pallet full of my most prized treasures. It was nice to start over…I cant wait until my budget expands and I can buy nice new stuff, but I do love a good thrift find. I would be delighted if you would visit my blog and tell me what you think. I am also having a giveaway that you might like. I hope you have a lovely day!
Thank you

Too funny. Mine was all sky vodka posters
Hey there! I just stumbled across your blog from the MML post about your 1st day self-employed. Congratulations! It’s fun to see what my fellow PugetSounders (I’m in Tacoma) are up to on the internets.
So now I have perused your blog and subscribed, and now I have a burning, veryimportantquestion I have been wanting to ask someone of the interior decoration persuasion for some time now:
“Where do you hide your DVDs?”
I see all these lovely bookshelves and TV tables with actual artistic elements to them. My bookshelves are CRAMMED with books (I’m a writer, my husband is an actor…we live in words), except for the last 2 shelves of one, which are CRAMMED with DVDs and videos. And the TV table is an electronic homage to dvd player, vcr (yes, still) and my husband’s gaming system.
Any suggestions, without buying special magic-hidey-hole furniture?
I love the look of bookcases used for both books and decorative elements.. but what about those of us who have tons of books and want to get at our TV-Related stuff?
Thanks!
emilie
Hi Emilie! That’s a great question. To see where we keep (most of) our dvd’s, see this post: http://www.maggieroseonline.com/2011/04/12/perspective/ . I also stash Ryan’s video games in the drawers of our tv console. I’ve been known to hide all my dvd’s (before I combined my collection with Ryan’s) in boxes or baskets. I don’t think there is anything wrong with a nice bookshelf for dvd’s – it’s that “media storage” furniture from electronic stores that gives me the design heebie-jeebies. How about a nice sturdy bookshelf with glass doors for the dvd’s? You can even add a basket or two for extra (not-everyday) remotes and video game controllers. Keeping them neat and pulled to the front of the shelves helps them look nice. Or get a cabinet with real doors if you really want to hide it – or even an antique dresser, with the spines facing up when you pull out the drawer. As far as books go – they are their own decoration! My only caveat with books is that when they are all packed together (without any decorative elements to break them up), they can make a wall very dark. I love built-in bookshelves (with a passion) but give your books some room to breathe, even if that means adding more shelves. We also have two bookshelves in our office that keeps another third of our books… they don’t all have to be in the same place! I hope that helps! xo Maggie
Found your gorgeous home and blog through Apartment Therapy. I learned from a wonderful family in Rome that your table should collect art books, trinkets and literature from your life travels. I thought I would pass this along.
Carol, what a beautiful sentiment! I’ll remember that. xo Maggie
Hi, I found you through your Apartment Therapy home tour. LOVE IT! I absolutely love your TV stand. I just moved into a “semi-furnished” apartment (some dishes and utensils, a dining room table, awful TV stand, and a bed, that’s it). I’ve been looking for something very similar for my TV. The one that came with the apartment is make of fake wood and falling apart. I’m worried I’m going to find my TV is going to be broken and on the floor whenever I walk in my apartment.
Anyway, I’m on week 3 in my new apartment, and your blog is inspiring me!
